Most recruitment of offshore divers comes from the onshore sectors. Divers who have spent some time in this sector have gained the necessary experience and learned valuable skills. This period of onshore employment is a divers ‘apprenticeship’ period and, as such is the normal route by which offshore divers are sourced.
There are always vacancies in this sector but the work tends to be short term. Contracts may run from as little as a few days, weeks or sometimes even months. There are often large periods of inactivity between jobs and it is often necessary to travel to look for new employment prospects.
If you ultimately wish to go offshore then you will almost certainly have to spend time in the onshore diving industry. To constantly seek employment in this area takes a certain amount of drive and tenacity.
